How to Create a Bill of Sale Template for a Vehicle, Boat or RV.

A Bill of Sale is a form used to document the sale and help you transfer ownership of a motor vehicle.

You will need a bill of sale template in order to register a used car, motorcycle, atv, recreational vehicle (RV), powerboat, jet ski or even a horse.

This document is required in order to apply for an original vehicle registration/title in most states of the US.

When buying a vehicle from an authorized dealer, the dealer usually submits your vehicle registration and title certificate application for the buyer.


Information needed on a Bill of Sale Form:

  • The date of the sale
  • The sales price.
  • Buyer and seller's names and addresses.
  • The vehicle's year, make, model, body type and VIN (vehicle identification number)
  • Both parties' signatures
  • Odometer reading(at time of sale)
  • Damage disclosure statement
  • Notary public seal (to id the seller and his/her signature)

DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO REGISTER A VEHICLE WITH THE DMV:

  • Proof of vehicle ownership
  • Proof of identity and date of birth of the registrant
  • Bill of Sale
  • Vehicle Registration/Title Application
  • Proof liability insurance
  • State's emissions standard (Smog Test)
  • Purchase/selling price (fees and taxes will be calculated at the dmv based on the blue book value of the vehicle) or 
  • Proof sales tax payment, exemption or purchase price
