MINNESOTA ATTORNEY GENERAL

United States Attorneys work under the direction of the Attorney General, serving as the country's principal litigators handling most of the trial work in which the United States is a party.

The lawyer for the State of Minnesota:

  • defends the State's laws and Constitution
  • enforces state consumer protection laws
  • defends suits against state agencies and state employees
  • serves as legal counsel of the state government
  • sits as an ex-officio member of state committees and commissions
  • administers the Crime Victims' Compensation Fund
  • issues legal opinions at the Governor's request, and other officials and agencies
  • approves public bond issues
  • collects court-ordered child support


Under Title 28, Section 547 of the United States Code, the 3 statutory responsibilities for the United States Attorneys are:

  • the prosecution of criminal cases for the Federal government;
  • the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the U.S. is a party; and
  • the collection of debts owed the Federal government.
